1. What is your dream? |
To reduce unemployment among Deaf people in Ghana through setting up restaurants that will be owned and managed (controlled) solely by Deaf people; Deaf people will both be workers and shareholders in the restaurants. |
2. How does your dream improve your Deaf community? |
1.Empower Deaf people economically. Reduce poverty among Deaf people2.Reduce negative self-perception and self-esteem among deaf people3. Reduce negative perception towards deaf people |
3. What have you done in the past to improve your Deaf community? |
1. I have been teaching Deaf students since 2003.2. I have conducted a study on the sexual and reproductive health needs of Deaf people in Ghana.3. I have been advocating for quality education for Deaf children since 2003 |
4. What can you tell us about education in your country? Do Deaf go to universities? How much is tuition? Etc. |
There are numerous problems facing Deaf education in Ghana, but a major one is lack of teachers who are competent in the Ghanaian Sign Language and understand Deaf children.About 99% of teachers in the Deaf school use speech as the medium of instruction. As a result, a large number of Deaf students in Ghana are unable to further their education after Senior High School. Very few enter the University and this positive change started just about three years ago. |
